Expect to be quoted $500 to $2,000 a month for local SEO in Iowa. The most common retainer among SEO providers nationally is $501 to $1,000 a month, and Iowa firms that publish an hourly rate mostly charge $100 to $149. Webiyo's plans are $397, $797 and $1,497 a month. What you should care about is how many hours or pages that money buys, and almost no quote tells you.

This post gives you the prices, then the conversion that makes them comparable.

  • Nationally, $501 to $1,000 a month is the most common SEO retainer, and providers who serve local markets average $1,557 a month.
  • Of 49 Iowa-based SEO firms we checked on October 12, 2026, 27 don't publish a starting price at all.
  • Of the 24 Iowa firms that list an hourly rate, 15 charge $100 to $149 an hour. At that rate, $1,000 a month is roughly 7 to 10 hours of work.
  • Price goes up with the number of locations, how crowded your trade is, and how much has to be fixed before new work can start.
  • A $99 plan buys less than one hour of a person's time at Iowa rates. Know what you're buying.

Where these prices come from

Three places, and I'll keep them separate so you can weigh each one.

The national numbers are from Ahrefs' pricing survey of 439 SEO providers, last updated in August 2024. It's the most detailed public survey I know of, and it's two years old, so read it as a floor.

The Iowa numbers are ours. On October 12, 2026 I went through Clutch's list of SEO companies for Des Moines and wrote down what each Iowa-based firm lists.

The third source is our own price list, because it's one of the few in the state that's public.

What Iowa firms publish

Not much, which is the first finding.

Of the 49 firms on that list with an Iowa address, 27 don't disclose a minimum project size. Among the 22 that do:

Minimum project size Iowa firms
$1,000 or more 8
$5,000 or more 12
$10,000 or more 1
$25,000 or more 1

A minimum project size isn't a monthly fee. It's the smallest job a firm will take on, and it tells you who they're built for. A shop with a $5,000 floor is set up for bigger engagements than a one-location plumber usually needs.

Hourly rates are easier to compare. 24 of the 49 list one:

Hourly rate Iowa firms
$25 to $49 1
$50 to $99 5
$100 to $149 15
$150 to $199 3

One thing I didn't expect: Ahrefs found that $75 to $100 an hour was the most popular rate among the providers it surveyed. The Iowa firms that publish a rate sit mostly one band higher. Those are two different sets of companies measured two years apart, so I won't claim Iowa is expensive. I will say I see no sign that Iowa is a discount market.

Turn the monthly price into hours

A monthly fee is hard to judge until you see it as time.

Take the most common Iowa rate band, $100 to $149 an hour, and divide.

Monthly budget Hours of work at $100 to $149 an hour
$500 About 3 to 5
$1,000 About 7 to 10
$1,500 About 10 to 15
$2,000 About 13 to 20

That is an estimate, and some firms price by deliverable instead of by hour. It's still the most useful question you can ask: "What will those hours go toward this month?"

Seven hours is a real amount of work. It's enough to write and publish one good service page, fix a batch of listings and send you a report. It isn't enough to do that and also build links, rewrite your home page and manage three locations. When a $1,000 plan promises all of it, part of that list isn't happening.

What each budget level gets you

This table is my judgment from the math above, not a survey.

Monthly budget What it realistically covers Who it fits
Under $500 Google Business Profile upkeep, listing fixes, one small piece of work, a short report One location in a small or mid-sized Iowa town
$500 to $1,000 One to three real builds a month: a new service page, a town page, a rebuilt page One location in the Des Moines metro, or a trade with moderate competition
$1,000 to $2,000 Several builds a month, outside mentions and links, competitor tracking Crowded trades, or two to three locations
$2,000 and up A named person on your account, content every week, many locations Multi-location businesses and the most competitive trades

For reference, here is how ours line up. Visible is $397 a month with one major build. Cited is $797 with three. Dominant is $1,497 with six.

A major build is a new service page, a service-area page, a rebuilt page or a trusted link. Every plan tracks what AI tools say about you each week. The full list is on the pricing page, and the SEO and AI Visibility pages explain the work.

I'm showing ours so you have one public price list to hold other quotes against, not because it's the right plan for every business. If you need a team in your office every month, we're the wrong shop.

Three examples, priced

These are made-up businesses in realistic situations. The prices are what I'd expect each one to be quoted, working from the numbers above.

A one-location plumber in Ankeny with 60 reviews and a decent website. Competition is light for most of the searches that matter, and the foundation mostly works. $400 to $800 a month is enough. That buys about one new page a month and keeps the listings clean. Paying $2,000 here buys work this market doesn't require yet.

An HVAC company with shops in Des Moines and Ames. That's two markets, each needing its own pages, its own listing and its own reviews. Expect $800 to $1,500. The second city is where quotes differ most, so ask every firm how it charges for it.

A roofer in the Des Moines metro, two years old, with 15 reviews. This is the most crowded of the three, and the business is starting from behind. Expect $1,500 and up. I'd pair it with ads in storm season, because SEO alone won't close a multi-year gap this year.

The pattern is that price follows how far behind you are and how many markets you're in. It doesn't follow how big your company is.

What month one should include

Whatever you pay, the first month should leave you with something on paper. A quote that can't describe month one is a quote for nothing in particular.

This is what we do in month one on every plan, and I think it's a fair standard for any firm:

  • A full audit of the site, your Google rankings and what AI tools say about you.
  • A written list of everything holding you back, in order.
  • Every business listing checked, with duplicates merged and wrong details corrected.
  • Technical problems that block search engines or AI crawlers fixed.
  • Titles and descriptions rewritten on your main pages.

If a firm's month one is "onboarding" and "strategy", ask what you'll be able to read at the end of it.

What pushes the price up

More locations. Search treats each city as a separate market. Each one needs its own page, its own listing and its own reviews. Ask how a firm charges for this, because the answers vary a lot. We add $10 a month per extra city or service area for AI visibility tracking.

A crowded trade. A roofer in the Des Moines metro is up against companies with thousands of reviews and years of pages. An electrician in a town of 5,000 may be up against two. Same service, and many times the work.

A messy starting point. Old addresses, duplicate listings and a site that search engines can't read properly all have to be fixed before new work counts. That's why month one often costs the same as later months but produces less you can see.

Who writes. If the firm writes your pages, that's hours. If you write them and they edit, it's fewer.

AI visibility. Some firms sell it as a separate service. One out-of-state agency advertising to Des Moines lists GEO at $1,500 to $5,000 a month. Others include it. Ask, because for a local business most of that work overlaps with SEO.

The cheap plan problem

You'll see SEO plans for $99 or $149 a month. I'm not going to tell you they're scams. I'll show you the arithmetic.

At $100 an hour, the low end of the common Iowa band, $99 buys just under one hour of a person's time. After reporting and billing, that leaves almost nothing.

So a plan at that price is software. It can keep your listings in sync and email you a dashboard, and for some businesses that's worth $99. What it can't do is look at your market, decide what page you're missing, and write it. If a cheap plan claims to, ask who does the writing and when.

What the money has to bring back

SEO is only expensive compared to what it returns, so set a target.

One useful yardstick is what a lead costs if you buy it. LocalIQ's 2026 benchmarks put the average cost per lead from search ads at $90.92 for home and home improvement.

Divide your SEO fee by that:

  • $397 a month is about 4 ad leads.
  • $797 a month is about 9.
  • $1,497 a month is about 16.

Once your SEO brings in more leads than that each month, it's beating ads on cost. Don't expect that in month two. Over a year it's a fair bar to hold any SEO plan to, and the leads keep coming if you pause, which ad leads don't. If you can't wait that long, ads are the better first spend, and I laid out how to decide in Google Ads, SEO or AEO first.

The quote comparison sheet

Quotes are hard to compare because every firm describes its work differently. Force them into the same nine rows.

Firm A Firm B Firm C
Monthly price
Shortest term
Setup or audit fee
Hours or builds per month
Locations included
AI visibility tracked? How often?
Who owns the website and accounts
How often you get a report
What they guarantee

Two rows deserve a second look. "Hours or builds per month" is the one most quotes leave blank. "Who owns the website and accounts" is the one that costs the most if you get it wrong. The questions to ask for each row are in how to hire a Des Moines SEO company.

FAQ

Is SEO cheaper in Iowa than in bigger states?

I don't see evidence that it is. Among Iowa firms that publish an hourly rate, the most common band is $100 to $149, which is higher than the $75 to $100 band Ahrefs found most popular in its survey. Competition is often lighter in Iowa towns, though, so the same budget can go further.

Can I pay for SEO once and be done?

For the foundation, yes. Fixing your listings, your Google Business Profile and your site's technical problems is one-time work. Staying ahead of competitors who keep adding pages and reviews is ongoing, which is why most of it is sold monthly.

Why do two quotes for the same business differ by $1,500?

Usually because they're quoting different amounts of work and not saying so. One includes writing new pages each month and the other includes reports. Put both into the comparison sheet above and the gap usually explains itself.

Do I have to pay extra for AEO?

It depends on the firm. For a local business, most of the work that gets you named in AI answers is the same work that gets you found on Google. On our plans SEO and AEO are one price.
